This program features disease-preventive measures and quality checks every step of the way, to help assure the safety and wholesomeness of every product we produce.
We are proud to have pioneered the development and implementation of pathogen-reduction initiatives at Townsend way back in 1987. These initiatives were similarly adopted by the United States Department of Agriculture as part of that agency's Pathogen Reduction Rule. Through its "Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points" (HACCP) program, the USDA now enforces pathogen reduction initiatives in poultry production facilities throughout the nation.
On the farm, Townsend recognizes the importance of producing healthy chicks, free from pathogens. Sanitation programs in our breeder flock facilities, hatcheries, and feed mills limit the exposure of birds to bacteria by controlling insect and rodent populations. In addition, biosecurity practices mandated by Townsend minimize the transmission of bacteria from flock to flock by human contact.
In our poultry processing facilities, HACCP-certified Quality Assurance managers and supervisors direct the daily monitoring of our quality program, and QA technicians routinely perform checks and sampling to assure that product specifications are being met. QA managers at each production complex report directly to our corporate QA Director, to assure consistent product quality throughout the company.
The Townsend Quality Assurance department conducts microbiological testing, using state-of-the-art equipment to identify microorganisms on poultry products. A modern Creative Development Center allows our corporate Research and Development department food scientists to create and refine new and better poultry products. Our laboratory and R&D professionals are routinely updated on the newest equipment and most current techniques.
